Discovery Committee

The Discovery Committee (DC) is a joint CRT/Cancer Research UK initiative operating directly to fund and develop research for patients benefit. Funding supports pre-clinical development projects within host laboratories or can facilitate collaborative drug discovery programmes within CRT’s Discovery Laboratories.

It is the sole Cancer Research UK committee which manages the development of projects arising from the Charity's basic research portfolio. The Committee is also responsible for Intellectual Property arising from outside the Cancer Research UK portfolio, but managed through CRT. Those eligible to take part in the scheme include:

  • Any Cancer Research UK funded scientist/clinician (project or programme grant holder, institute or direct employee);
  • Any other scientist with an original idea, funded through another organisation, where CRT handles, or will handle, its intellectual property arrangements;
  • Any potential collaborating UK scientist (irrespective of funding body) who has been identified by the originating scientist or the charity as bringing important skills to assist product development.

The Discovery Committee meets and reviews fund applications on a quarterly basis and applications are made with support and advice from CRT.

The application process is relatively short and straight forward, but all projects must meet the specifications of The DC to be successful.  CRT Business Managers can advise scientists putting DC applications together and make every effort to ensure that only applications with a good chance of being funded are submitted.
