| Relevance: | The Snail superfamily are zinc finger transcription factors that represses expression of E-cadherin, desmoplakin, muc-1, cytokeratin18 while enhances expression of vimentin and fibronectin (all events associated to EMT). Snail1 overexpression leads to epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and has a strong association with metastatic disease: Snail expression has been detected in various cancer indications - any carcinoma. Over expression of Snail 1 in epithelial cells produces an invasive phenotype, in vitro and in vivo. Examination of biopsies of invasive breast tumours have shown that all primary tumours that had lymph node metastases expressed Snail. |
